Shooting Your Own Video
- Orientation: please shoot landscape/widescreen, NOT portrait.
- Shot: head and shoulders for singers, wider shot to include some of instrument for ensembles.
- Background: please shoot against a plain, solid, light coloured background if you have one in or around your house.
- Lighting: Outside: with sun on your face, but not too bright. Slightly shady or overcast is better, more even lighting. Inside: use natural light coming in a window in front of you. The more even the better (pull down a shade to soften harsh sunlight). Nighttime: use a soft light if you have one. You can even put wax paper or baking paper over a hard light to soften it.
- Tripod: please make your camera, phone or iPad steady with a tripod or prop it up on something.
- Audio: if you have a separate mic to plug into your device, please use it. Otherwise the built-in mic on your device is fine. Make sure you are close enough and you are in a quiet environment. Turn off air conditioners or heaters with fans.
- Headphones or ear buds: please use them so we don’t hear the backing track. Using them in only one ear is usually better to hear yourself singing or playing your instrument.
- Movement: remember you’re on camera! Sing or play as you would, but try not to flinch, grimace, fidget, or touch your face during the rests.
- Takes: don’t be afraid to shoot multiple takes to get the best one.
- File format: please shoot in HD format – most smartphones already use this, so you shouldn’t need to change anything.
- frame size: 1920×1080
